Snickers Strikes Again

May 12, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Drive In DoggieSnickers is my 11 year old Shih Tzu. She never ceases to amaze me how she alerts me when my body goes into fight or flight, my blood pressure goes up, my sugar goes down or there is a dangerous smell in the house like rotten vegetables in the fridge (happened once) or mold in the bathroom.

See what else Snickers is up to. She hates the video camera, so it is hard for me to get video of her doing all her incredible things. She stops as soon as I turn it on. Now that I have video on my phone, I am hoping to catch those moments, as well as dozens of cute things she does!

Mom Kick ButtMy mom and I have been living with debilitating illness for many, many years. Two and a half years ago, she was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. This is a short video of my mom expressing her incredible attitude and perseverance after an appointment with a new neurologist last week!

You are amazing, Mom!! Happy Mother’s Day! I love you!

Peppermint Patty Come Home

January 28, 2013 by Sherri Leave a Comment

Meet Peppermint PattySomething happened yesterday that I have dreamed of for a very, very, VERY long time. Something that I hoped for, for so long that I had accepted would probably never happen.

But after an extremely hard year of losing my brother, my mom battling lung cancer and my sister battling breast cancer, the time had come.

Little did we know it was well worth the wait, because someone else was praying too.

I had horses until 24 years ago. Always wanted another one! We moved to this house to get one, with the hopes of me getting well. It is a big commitment and responsibility to take on when I can’t even keep up with my own needs. But life was passing me by, so Wayne and I decided to take the plunge!

Peppermint Patty is my Therapy Horse. She provides emotional support, confidence and determination, as well as balance and strength when I walk with her.

UPDATE March 17: We are devastated. Patty wasn’t getting along with our goats nor our dog. She began seriously acting out, because she was lonely and wanted to get to them. We tried for 2 months with the help of Mini Horse experts and trainers to make it work. My heart has been ripped from my chest. I love her more than words can say.

Thankful for 2012 Fragrance Free Holidays with Family

January 6, 2013 by Sherri Leave a Comment

I am so thankful for my family who made it possible for me to spend the weekend in their home for Thanksgiving. The weekend was filled with being surrounded by my amazing nephews and I was loving it!!

I enjoyed every moment of the kids running around, playing, wrestling and most of all for their giving and caring hearts! It was incredible to be there with my sister, brother in law, their kids and Wayne’s mom (Karen). I have not been there for a long time, because they had some remodeling done and it took a while for all the new paints and carpets to out-gas.

What’s more, they came and stayed at our house for two days after Christmas. And, we were able to spend Christmas Eve Day with Wayne’s dad, mom (Eloise) and more family. Yay!

Thank you all for switching to fragrance free laundry several many years ago (it takes a while to get out of clothes, so that is IMG_0514something that does need to be changed ahead of time) then using FF shampoo, soap and deodorant before we spent time together.
I hope that more families will see that it is possible and unleash us from isolation and back into the arms of those we love!
Watch my latest video interview, “Going Fragrance-Free When Visiting a Loved One. I interviewed my sister in law, Melanie and her son, Cole! Great tips and suggestions for bringing friends and family back together!

Another Amazing Rainbow in Memory of Jim

December 7, 2012 by Sherri Leave a Comment

The last time I saw my brother, Jim, was on Thanksgiving 2011. He passed away 4 weeks later. On our way to his memorial service, I asked God for a “Miraculous Rainbow.”

We were in the mountains, facing the sun and it was winter without any rain. Impossible, right?

Nope! We turned a corner and saw the most spectacular colors from one horizon to the other! When I tried to take a picture of it, this is what showed up … a giant RAINBOW leaping out of the sky and into our car!!! Amazing!

Rainbow of colors from horizon to horizon

This year, we were without my brother. But when we sat down to eat, there was the rainbow in several beams of color shining across my plate and setting (the photo doesn’t do the colors justice). Thank you, Lord for the reminder that Jim is with you!

Safari Sherri Explores the Wild Jungle

December 5, 2012 by Sherri 2 Comments

Went to the mall today and bought a new hat! OK so it wasn’t the mall, it was the hospital, but who cares?

I was there for two appointments. There was a dealer there with his racks of junk all over the lobby. Yep, junk (but I like junk). Most of it was marked, “Everything on this rack $6.” 20% was donated to the hospital, so that is cool.

Anyhow, I crept along the rows of wears until I came upon my jungle prize! It was a new leopard hat to go with the jacket and scarf I was already wearing! I didn’t hesitate, but scooped it up like a leopard protecting her cub. What a find! Ooh la la!

I also enjoyed seeing this Beautiful Nativity there. It is life size and spectacular! To top it all off, I had a wonderful surprise! My friends, Barb and Pam and few other gals where there visiting someone.

Wowee! I just pretended that instead of being at a hospital for tests and stuff, I was out shopping, running into friends and enjoying the decorations and music. I can’t tell you the last time I have done anything like this and have missed the whole experience so much!

And, yes there were lots of challenges there, everywhere! But I took them on like a wild leopard, swatting them away with my strong paws and great-big, giant GRRRRAWRRRR!! Don’t mess with Safari Sherri!

Just counting my blessings wherever I can! Even in the midst of doctor appointments, I found some great things to be thankful for!

On Stage for the Musical, The Boyfriend

October 30, 2012 by Sherri Leave a Comment

Ingrid, Sherri and Becca

This was many years ago, in my “Past Life” of singing and dancing in musicals, acting in commercials, modeling in fashion shows, working multiple jobs, obtaining several degrees, enjoying my accounting career, lifting weights and riding my horse!

My hubby started getting my old pictures and videos scanned and uploaded to the computer. I look forward to when it is all done and preserved.

These are pictures and videos from my most favorite musical, The Boyfriend!

I played Maise, the flirtatious young gal who grabbed onto everything life with wonder and excitement. Bobby, played by Scott Pankow was smitten with Maise and determined to win her over.

The entire play takes a satirical look at musicals from the 20′s and 30′s. Everything is colorful, big and a bit over the top. What a blast!

It’s not just the applause and being in the spotlight I miss, but being able to sing and dance and make people laugh! At least I can still make people laugh! *Big Smile!*

My Adventure with Groucho and Friends

September 15, 2012 by Sherri Leave a Comment

I finally made it to the Toyota Elephant Passage at the Denver Zoo!! I absolutely love, Love, LOVE elephants!! I am cRaZy about them!!

I had not planned to return to the zoo, because it broke my heart to see the elephants in a small space. When I heard about their new bard and yards, I had to go see!

I live with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis and Late-Chronic Lyme Disease, so every day I feel like I have a horrible case of flu and can barely get out of bed, get my food or take a shower. So, as you can imagine, getting to the zoo is quite an endeavor.

What’s more, we had to wait for a day that wasn’t too hot and not very busy, due to my chemical intolerances. Thankfully, I only ran across a couple of situations and was able to speed away on my scooter!

I don’t like seeing animals confined and I would love for all the zoos to be closed and only have reserves for those animals who need to live out there lives, endangered species or injured animals.

But for these particular elephants who are having to live in a zoo, I am happy to see that they have built this new space for them! There are three yards with pools and the barn for four elephants.

Twice a day, they have a show in the amphitheater. However, none of the animals are forced to come into the yard nor are the forced to do tricks. They are “asked” to do the tricks and rewarded whether they do them or not and they do not have to do anything if they don’t want to. That is a great improvement!

On the day we were there, Groucho came into the theater and was happy to jump in for a swim, some treats and applause. He even took his time leaving, but was free to go when he pleased.

I wish I could free Groucho and all the animals from all the zoos and circuses! Still, I am thankful they are getting much better treatment and have a nicer place to live. I am hoping this is the beginning a wake up call for all zoos to provide much better surroundings for all animals!

Personally, I financially support the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and have told many people about them over the years. I have linked to their website, videos and even posted Shirley’s birthday on my page. They are a fabulous reserve where the elephants roam free during the day on 250 acres and come into a large barn at night.

I encourage everyone to support various reserves, especially those like the Elephant Sanctuary, so that more work can be done to help give formerly abused and captured animals the retirement they deserve, as well as help populate endangered species and mend those who have been injured.

My Mother’s Day Adventure and Blessings

May 15, 2012 by Sherri Leave a Comment

On Mother’s Day, Wayne and I picked up some Texas Roadhouse “to go” and took it to my mom’s to enjoy. Then, we took her for a short drive. She hasn’t been out of the house for many months, except to go to doctor appointments or the hospital.

Her car tire was low, so we stopped to get air then parked at Sonic Drive-In for some desserts. This particular store has a great view of the green plains, trees and rolling hills. Quite enjoyable!

When we got ready to go, the car wouldn’t start. Wayne got the waitress to try to jump start it, but the battery was totally dead. No go. Wayne called our friends, Jamie and Ginger and Jamie came right over. The two of them went to the store, got a new battery and replaced it.

OK so the tire (which turned out to have a nail and Wayne had to go get it repaired) and the battery were a big bummer. We could have sat and wallowed in the fact that he had to do all this work and we had to sit in the car for a long time. But instead, I would like to point out some things we are thankful for and a big surprise blessing!

First of course, we were oh so grateful to still be able to spend the day with my mom. She has been battling lung cancer for over a year. To make matters worse, my brother unexpectedly passed away last December. It has been a horrific 5 months for us and this was her first Mother’s Day without him. Thankfully, just a few days before Mother’s Day, we found out that the very large mass in her lungs had gone down. It isn’t gone, but it has shrunk. What a great Mother’s Day gift!

Second, we are thankful that the tire didn’t blow and the battery didn’t die with my mom trying to drive the car (she hasn’t driven since last December). Third, Jamie was home and happy to rescue us! Thank you, Jamie and Ginger! You are the BEST!

Last, but not least, I was a part of a really neat thing that happened just before we left. When I got out of the car to hug Jamie, I notice my shoe was untied. I bent over right behind the car to tie it and there was something shiny on the ground. At first, I was thinking it was a can top. But I leaned over and it was a little, silver ring! I picked it up and it appeared to have 3 little diamonds in it. I knew someone was really missing this ring!

So, I went inside the store and asked for the manager. I told him that I had found a ring and that someone must be dearly missing it and asked him to put it in a safe place until someone comes to claim it. Just then, an employee overheard and yelled, “I think that is my ring!” She had been standing about 10 feet behind the manager and ran up to us, so the manager hid the ring in his hand.

I asked if she could describe it. She said, “It is Sterling Silver, has one large flower in the middle and two little flowers on each side with tiny diamonds.” She continued, “My mom gave it to me. I lost it and I have been SO upset! I couldn’t find it anywhere!” The manager said, “Well, that’s a pretty accurate description!” then he looked at me as if to ask, “Should I give it to her?”

I said, “OK, Cinderella, just like the glass slipper, let’s see if it fits. What finger did you wear it on?” She stuck out her hand and pointed to her right ring finger. He handed it to her and whoa-la! It was hers!

I said, “Give me a hug!” Then I told her, “Happy Mother’s Day! Cherish this ring and your mom, because moms aren’t around forever!” She replied with a huge smile and tears in her eyes, “I know! Thank you!” and I walked out.

Wow! I never would have found this ring and been able to personally return it to this young gal had the battery not died and stranded us there. This ring was nearly under my car and would have easily blown away or washed away next time they cleaned the lot. Thank you, Lord, that what we may otherwise thought of as nothing but a day of things going wrong, we were reminded that we were there for a reason … for many reasons. Thank you for the opportunity to bless others!
